The exhibition “I like myself, I like others” shows how artists Bruin Parry and Jan Hoek are connected in special way. They have known each other since Parry’s birth and when the two artists join forces they create something magical. Their collaboration resulted in the creation of ‘No Limits! Art Castle,” a unique art space where artists, including those who are usually left out, come together.

This exhibition features self-portraits by Parry, enriched with special effects. The self-portraits symbolize Parry’s sense of self-worth and self-confidence. Different sides of Parry’s personality are expressed in each photograph. Nevertheless, the rockstar allure oozes from each photograph. His images capture the person standing between Bruin Parry and his alter ego, Bruin Jackson.

Whereas Parry mainly celebrates himself, Hoek focuses instead on the diversity and colorfulness of others. Hoek’s photographs are never just registrations, but collaborations with people. For example, in addition to Parry, he worked with homeless trans sex workers designing their own clothes, a heroin-addicted girl who dreamed of a life as a supermodel and scooter owners whose vehicles were transformed into driving works of art. Hoek captures images of people who are seen as extraordinary or deviant. He is committed to breaking these stigmas and imposed labels. He humanizes them and normalizes their image so that others can better recognize themselves in their stories.

This exhibition raises the question of whether terms like “normal,” “deviant,” “ordinary” and “separate” are definable. Are such labels still of our time or do they instead contribute to confusion and division?
